Using a maternity pillow during pregnancy offers several benefits, helping to alleviate pain, maintain the recommended side-sleeping position and help you get that much needed sleep!
It contours to the body, supporting key areas such as the belly, back, and knees, which can relieve pressure on these regions. This targeted support can reduce the strain on muscles and joints, often leading to less pain and discomfort. By improving alignment and reducing pressure, a pregnancy pillow can significantly contribute to a more comfortable and restful sleep, which is vital during pregnancy.
In Australia, Red Nose recommends side-sleeping from 28-weeks to significantly reduce the risk of stillbirth. When you sleep on your back during later stages, it can pressure major blood vessels, diminishing blood flow to the womb and reducing your baby's oxygen supply. Research indicates that sleeping on your side cuts the risk of late-term stillbirth by half compared to back sleeping (read more at Red Nose here), which is where a supportive pregnancy pillow comes in.
With the pain and discomfort of muscle strain and the stress of rolling on to your back eliminated, it’s easy to see how a pregnancy pillow can help you get a good night’s rest. But not all pillows (and pillow shapes) are created equal. At Love Little, we’ve tested a huge number of pregnancy pillows, from U-shape, to C-shape, to chucking a standard pillow between the knees; we have tried it all, so you can trust us when we say, we know good (and bad!) sleep.
The Sleepybelly Pregnancy Pillow is actually three pillows combined into one “system” that you can move and adjust to fit you, depending on your size and sleeping preference.
There are two smaller semi-circle shaped wedge pillows and one longer one, so you can mix and match the placement under your bump, behind your back and between your knees to find the most comfortable position for you, and also ensures you’re supported from every angle.
Because of this, it provides excellent support for both the belly and back, which is especially helpful in the later stages of pregnancy. Its design ensures that you don't roll onto your back during sleep, and we found it both supportive and comfortable, without being too restrictive or feeling suffocating.
“One thing I particularly appreciated about this pillow is its adjustability. As my body changed throughout my pregnancy, I could easily adjust the pillow to suit my growing belly. This adaptability is a significant advantage over other pregnancy pillows I tried.” - Sarah V, Little Love Team Member
We also found that having 3 pieces meant that we didn’t have to readjust the pillow when we rolled over or shifted positions during the night which was far less disruptive than I shaped pillows that only lie on one side of your body. The semi-circles are also wedged to contour your belly, making it more supportive and far more comfortable to sleep on your side.
The Sleepy Belly Maternity Pillow's fabrics and overall quality were impressive. As a team, we’ve tried many a lumpy pregnancy pillow that hasn’t stood up to the first trimester, let alone a full 9 months.
The cover is not only soft and gentle against the skin, important for pregnancy sensitivity, but also breathable, which is a significant advantage for comfortable sleep without overheating. The fabric's durability is notable, ensuring the pillow withstands regular use throughout pregnancy. Its ability to retain shape and support over an extended period adds to its high-quality appeal.
“The quality and feel of the Sleepy Belly Maternity Pillow truly exceeded my expectations. The fabric is incredibly soft and it felt very supportive and durable, holding up well throughout my pregnancy.” - Keira S, Parent Reviewer
In our experience, one drawback of the Sleepy Belly Maternity Pillow was its size. While it's not huge, it did take up a significant amount of space in the bed, which might be a concern if you're sharing the bed with a partner. Additionally, adjusting to sleeping with a pillow of this type can take a few nights, especially if you're not used to using body pillows, but overall we found this one of the most comfortable pregnancy pillows we’ve tried.
The Sleepy Belly Maternity Pillow excels in providing comfort, support, and versatility for expectant mums.
It’s comfortable, adjustable and supportive which are the key things you want when selecting a pregnancy pillow. At Love Little we only recommend products that we’ve used and genuinely love and we’re happy to say, this is one of them!
